Social Bookmarking - Another dimension added to my learning
Every week , I realize that there are so many tools "out there" that I have not even heard of, let alone have used. I am eager to implement them in my personal and professional life. As I was introduced to Diigo, the knowledge sharing and research tool, I considered its benefits. I have never been comfortable reading a document online. Now, this will help improve my comfort level as I can highligh, annotate and retrieve it later. I like the idea of being able to share these readings with students, hoping that the content will add to their learning or pique their interest to explore the ideas further. I really like the idea of having content that is tailored to my interests delivered to me. Presently, I have some daily emails sent, but this seems mouc more effectual. To me, reading is a social event and this supports that belief and enables that socialization to take place.

I like the idea of highlighting sites both for my own personal use and to help the students. Even as a math teacher, I can see the idea of teaching students to way to read text and highlight information. I believe that the more exposure to this type of activities the students are exposed to in middle school, the more accustomed they will be when it comes to doing research in high school and college. It offers a little way to incorporate a cross-curricular activity.
ReplyDeleteI like the highlighting tool also! I like portions of text without having to keep the whole article. I also like how even if the article link disappears, I still have the piece I pulled down to be mine! That is so valuable for teachers since links change like the wind sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI think the online piece for students creates a way to tap their various intelligences because they have to use motor skills to get there and it is interactive, not just passive reading.
I also love the Diigo highlighting tool. Our American History textbook online tools include highlighting portions of text. With all the free web2.0 tools, we soon will not need textbooks, and can use the money to pay for more technology instead. We just need to model and teach the students how to be ethical in our media driven world.
ReplyDeleteI feel like you. I really thought that I was tech savvy until I signed up for this class. It is mind boggling to find out all that is out there and it's value in the classroom. I am still working through Diigo but I like the highlighting tool. I am looking forward to using it.
